No. Gnosis is not a religion, and the classes at the Ballston Spa Gnostic Center do not ask you to follow any belief system. Gnosis is a method of self-knowledge, verified through your own experience rather than accepted on faith.
The word Gnosis means knowledge: not book knowledge, but the direct, experiential understanding that comes from within. The teachings study the universal principles found in the sciences, philosophies, arts and spiritual traditions of many cultures, from the Hebraic Kabbalah to Buddhism. Rather than promoting one tradition over another, Gnosis looks for the common thread of truth running through all of them.
The weekly classes are open to people of any faith and of none. Nothing taught is meant to be believed on authority: the aim is that whatever is taught can be verified by the student in their own practice, chiefly through meditation. As the teachings put it, Gnosis lives in facts and withers away in abstractions.
Gnosis respects all spiritual traditions and sees them as different paths to the same truth, which is why the curriculum draws on the world’s religious scriptures alongside psychology, alchemy and meditation. Studying Gnosis does not require leaving your religion, and it does not require adopting one either.
